DINOSAUR JR X DOGTOWN - Released 2018
In creating collaborative projects, some take longer than others. Our good friend Otis also know as “O” is a veteran skate photographer, musician, and artist(R.I.P.) first conceived the concept during a visit to the Dogtown warehouse. It was a no-brainer to combine Dogtown Skateboards and Dinosaur Jr, who have both influenced generations of skateboarders in doing a collaborative deck project. Shortly thereafter O was visiting his friend and fellow artist Kristi Sanders house and saw her oil painted Alien Hitchhiker version of the classic “Where You Been” album cover on a beat up skate deck and it blew his mind. Otis ended his visit by taking the board with him so he could show it to J. Mascis who green lighted the graphic for the Dogtown x Dinosaur Jr. Limited Edition Collaboration.
J. visualized using one of Neil Blenders 80’s shapes with a mellow vintage concave that he loved. After receiving Neil’s blessing on using his board shape, the project was presented to Jim Johnson, the master board builder at Watson Laminates. Jim had built the original G&S Neil Blender decks at Watson Laminates where all the original templates are still available. What sets these boards apart is the handmade “pickle finish” paint that is 100% unique and the process and technique to paint these boards is so time consuming that this might be the last time this finish is ever used on a skateboard. On top of the ‘pickle finish’ and Silk Screened graphic, Jim ‘Red Dog’ Muir added his touch by painting an additional six extra coats of paint, elbow grease, and other treatments to make this high gloss finish a truly one of a kind deck signed by J. Mascis.
